PROJECT 03A

OH WHAT A RELIEF!

For this project, we had to design a 'situation on how we could express "relief". The whole class went to Tioman Island for a better understanding of our chosen location and the surroundings.

Me and my groupmates, Khairin and Fatin chose our toilet to be on top of a rock, on the bridge between Nazri's place and Pusat Taman Laut. Surrounding the rocks was jungles, trees, and the view was the wide sea.

TOILET1

This was our first design of the toilet. But we were told that this was too much of a safe design. Honestly, it felt so harsh knowing that this design was not good enough.. but looking at it from a different perspective, I actually am very happy with what we had to go through; we faced a very hard time trying to come up with various ideas in a short period of time. But what's important is, the learning journey that me and my groupmates managed to experience. (at least for me) So we redid a whole new one.

description

The toilet is designed to be more than just what it’s meant for. Built with maritime elements to cater for an enjoyable lifestyle by the sea and with a semi-open look that not only blends but also enhances its natural surroundings.

Perched on a rock, the toilet not only serves the needs of relieving oneself or to shower after a fun day at the beach which it does so in the most relaxed, comfortable and functional manner. It also has a purpose-built second-floor viewing deck for you to feel the breeze while watching the morning sky or unwind your tired bodies while watching the sun go down the horizon.

building materials

The main structure i.e. columns, most parts of the walls and trusses are made of wood. Part of the walls, windows, deck, and roof are made of ‘one-way view’ glass.  Rope, an element used widely on boats are being used both to strengthen the structure as well as accentuate the whole design.

Sand, pebbles, stones, rocks, and corals are also used functionally as well as decorative elements throughout the design.

layout

Upon climbing the stairs to the top of the rock, you are greeted with stepping stones to enter the toilet. On the left is a well and to the right, a ladder to take you to the deck upstairs.

A few steps inside, the central wall divides the three areas i.e. the sink, the WC and shower areas. With ‘one-way view’ glasses, windows on the sides and the WC and shower areas glass wall allow users to view the beauty outside without compromising their privacy.

The water tank is located on the left side while the roof is of clear glass to ensure that the blue sky in the day and the starry night sky are not to be missed.

amenities

Water supply comes from two sources as follows:

  1. Rain water harvesting – The roof is lined with gutter to collect rain water which is then collected into the water tank. The tank is equipped with a disposable filter and the water is piped strictly for flushing the toilet (into the underground septic tank)

  2. Well water – The well harvests ground water from more than 100 feet below the ground giving good quality water. A pump and filter is used to channel clean water to the sink and shower. A manual pump is also available for one to collect pails of water to clean their feet etc. before entering the toilet.
